The ones I've seen can't store energy at all; the generator is just wired directly to the light so you have to keep cranking. Whereas the Forever Shaker uses either some kind of big capacitor or a chemical battery to store the energy for a short while; I don't know which.

A flashlight called the Forever Shaker should be oval and made of joined wood, and it should play a song about simple gifts.
