01. When does liking someone a lot become loving that person?
There are different ways of answering this, but if just thinking about someone can instantly take me out of a bad mood (even for just a little while), then that's a pretty good sign.
02. Is there a job you would do for free, and is it your current job?
Mostly the things I do for free I don't consider a job and vice-versa, but I guess the musician thing comes closes to being both. These days I have been playing some paid gigs, but I suspect that once I factor in expenses it's pretty much a wash, and being paid is kind of a recent development anyway.
03. What is one person/thing that inspired you to take action of some sort?
In Rhode Island, folks who wanted to amend the state constitution to forbid gay marriages inspired me to write to my state reps for the first time ever.
04. Though you might not believe in it, would you like fate to exist?
I don't think it makes much of a difference to how I live my life either way. I guess abstractly I would prefer not, but I don't see it being very relevant.
05. What's the kindest thing that anyone has ever done for you?
When I have clearly been very unhappy and sort of going out of my mind, taking me out and telling me that they care and talking about ways to get through it. I am often insecure about myself and worry that I am imposing myself too much on my friends, especially when I am feeling down, so this was about the best thing that anyone could have done for me.
One of the people who did this was my friend Rachel (who now lives in San Francisco) suggested organizing regular music get-togethers, which I did for a year or two before running out of steam. Apart from being fun in their own right this led to me to start playing regularly with CMonti, which led to all sorts of neat musical experiences -- playing in a hip-hop band, opening for Paul Geremia, buying an accordion ... (This could also be an alternative, more positive response to question #3.)
