At band practice tonight (when I could have been bowling with [livejournal.com profile] knitdrinkprov! arrrr!) we were going over a new song which had a section in stop time.

So I was talking about what was supposed to be happening in the stop time section, except I kept accidentally saying 'stop sign' instead of 'stop time', which totally confused Ed the drummer.

He asked for explanation and I realized my mistake and said, 'Sorry, in the stop time section ...'

He said, 'Oh, stop time! I thought you said stop sign.'

I said, "That's because I did stay sop stine.' Which should have been a joke, but actually my brain was temporarily out of order.

The end.

Also, apparently I'm a jerk. I guess that isn't a big surprise. [Not a request for intervention or anything, particularly since it seems to be resolved, but I thought the whole interaction was interesting.]

Each of my two bands is playing this coming Saturday (June 18):
  • The Killdevils are playing at Main Street Music at 165 Main Street in East Greenwich from 11 to 1 pm. The first hour we plan to play solo, then other people can sit in if desired. With a bit of luck my friend Rachel Ede (who will be visiting) will come along and bring her fiddle.
  • Third Story Congress (aka the dance band) just got a last minute gig playing at the Blackstone in Cumberland. We will get the show started at 9 pm, and two other bands (Private Tremendous, a band which shares a drummer with us, and Uncle Everett, which I don't know much about) will also be playing.
I hope some of you can make it to one show or the other, but if you can't, wish us luck!

One of the things that I have been thinking about regarding the dance band is that when we play at AS220 we will have to perform all original material (I assume that policy will still be in place), and almost all of our original material is written and performed by Chris (the exception being a song I wrote for my nephew Ezra in February).

So I've been thinking about writing more songs; kind of difficult. The other week I was listening through some stuff I recorded and I thought that Interests Are Stupid might have some dance band possibilities, although I wasn't sure whether we would actually want to do it or not. So I emailed the link around to the other members of the band and asked what they thought.

Some time passed, and after a week or so Chris sent me a note about something unrelated which included this:
Also, on the orrig JH song you asked about last week: Musically I like it and I think we could do some interesting thing. Lyrically I think its kind of thin. I rarely feel that joke lyrics hold up to repeated listenings. This week I told the same jar-of-jellybeans joke 4 times 4 different people. It was not funny after the second time, because it wasn't funny to me and I couldn't put my heart into it. That being said, if you want to stand by the lyric and you want to do the song, its OK with me.
...which is reasonable and fair enough. However, the font I use to read my email (Monaco) has the unfortunate feature that lowercase 'a's and 'o's look pretty similar, so where Chris had written 'I rarely feel that joke lyrics hold up to repeated listenings' I thought he had written 'I rarely feel that jake lyrics hold up to repeated listenings'. 'Ow! The sting of honest criticism!' I thought.

Anyway, I was relieved today when I reread the email and discovered what it actually said.

The end.

The dance band (aka Third Story Congress) has a bunch of free Fridays and Saturdays in the upcoming months, so if you've got a party that you'd like us to play at, let me know! (Now that some of you have heard us play you may have a better idea of whether this is a good idea or not.)

We do have a few shows coming up though ...

* Saturday June 18 (this coming saturday) Chris and I will be playing as The Killdevils at Main Street Music at 165 Main Street in East Greenwich from 11 to 1 pm. We'll probably play for the first hour solo and then let other people sit in. With a little luck, our friend Rachel Ede (who will be visiting) will bring her fiddle and do some playing. If you're down East Greenwich way check us out!

* Saturday July 2 Third Story Congress will be playing a hip-hop show with rappers Mr. Bodega, B.C., and maybe others at AS220. There will be a $6 cover. This is the day after AS220 reopens after remodelling, so it will be exciting to see the new performance space!

* Friday Julyl 16 we'll again be backing up Mr. Bodega and others as part of AS220's 20th anniversary celebration! There will be many great bands playing; I will in particular be keeping an eye out for Erin McKeown.

We played a lot of goofy stuff last night that is unlikely to ever be performed publicly. It was a lot of fun! Among the pieces played were:

- Back in Black (sort of)
- Tequila
- Wipe Out
- Earth Angel
- A medley of Also Sprach Zarathustra, Violence, and Folsom Prison Blues.

Less goofy songs that were played included:

- Hard to Handle
- Money (That's What I Want)
- Rock & Roll [the Velvet Underground song]
- Cities
- cats [a Chris Monti original]
- Leaving in the Morning (another CMonti song)
- Papa Was A Rolling Stone
- I Feel Like Dynamite
- I'm The Slime
- You Gotta Serve Somebody

This probably demonstrates that goofiness is somewhat in the eye of the beholder.

Let's see. Working backwards:

- Chris has been talking about putting together a dance band, and he, I, and two other people actually met last Thursday to talk about if it was worth trying or not (this is why I had to duck out of sushi early). The tentative decision was that, yes, we should try having a practice on Sunday to see how it went.

- However, on Sunday around 5 pm I got a call from Chris indicating that practice was off and probably so was the entire dance band concept. It turns out that this was overstated, however. This was clarified today.

- So on Friday we'll have an actual practice. (Which means I'll miss the Friday SNB again. Sigh.)

- Which means that tomorrow Chris and I should probably try to work out some arrangements of stuff to try in the larger group on Friday.

- Which means: no street musicianing tomorrow. Oh well!

The dance band thing should be fun, though. Mmmmm.

Also: live music at Trinity Brewhouse on Wednesdays appears to be no longer happening (though this, too, may be overstated), and many of the musicians who previously played at Trinity are now at the Hi-Hat on Point Street. So tomorrow night I will probably go to check out the Hi-Hat and see if I want to bring my father and his wife there next week when they may be visiting.

The end.
