Garfield has taken an odd turn.

The joke puzzled me so much that it took a while to notice Garfield's odd hobo scarf.

Does anyone have any idea what it means?

Not a clue, but

Maybe just a poorly-written joke about the smell of dormant heaters switching on?

If you're looking for the inscrutable, though, check out Marmaduke. I swear, half the time there isn't even a punchline.

(Also, I saw Charlotte and the gang this weekend -- you've got quite the active nephew!)

It reads somewhat more violently if you switch the second and third panels.

"Specify type of goat."

I thought

it might have something to do with burnt offerings, but I couldn't quite make the connection to either Judaism or Satanism.

OK, well, I think Garfield's in a quilt and drinking cocoa because it's cold. Because it's cold, Jon turns on the furnace, which supposedly has been sitting dormant all winter. Furnaces smell nasty when they're first turned on, which is the joke. Except, why is he just turning on the furnace now, it's the end of February! Wow, Garfield has gotten bad.

I wackyparsed "FOOD" as "POOP" in that first strip and noticed it make perfect sense that way.

It's also odd if you drop the third panel and read "goats" as "ghats." Then Garfield's warding off the morning chill somewhere along the Ganges, reminiscing about the days of the Raj.
