I've been fiddling around with a method for knitting Möbius strips to see what sorts of interesting things I can do with it.

Möbius strip

Because Möbius strips only have one edge, if you switch colors it ends up looking like there are two stripes of the new color. Deceptive!

Anyway, one of the question that comes up for some reason when I tell people I'm knitting a Möbius strip is what I'm going to do with it when I'm done.

The kitten you can cut in half and have two interlinked kittens!

Also, what happens when you stick one in a box with a decaying radioactive substance that can possibly trigger a hammer that etc.

So, like,

how do you start this thing, anyhow? Do you just whip the first row onto the circular needle (so there's no spine to it) and then thread the needle through the same loops a second time? Or do you cast on the first row as normal and then thread the needle through the back loops of the cast-on stitches?

Working forwards and backwards simultaneously is far more elegant than rethreading! Not that I ever knit or even have any needles (though we have PLENTY of yarn in the house after the Wool Festival (http://www.sheepandwool.com/)), but that doesn't stop me from enjoying imaginary tinkering.
