It was a song about the songwriter's excitement at moving to NYC from Minneapolis, that's all. Or so I learned from a VH1 show about dance songs.

the most brilliant cover version ever,
poorly excerpted here
(http://www.funkytown.com/ftown/real/agitpop.ram) (as the brilliance lies in the contrast between the treatment of the verses, which you don't get to hear here, and the chorus).

Who does the songwriter want to take him or her to Funkytown?

This might be an important piece of the puzzle:

Well, not only that, but the songwriter moved! He no longer needs anyone to take him there!

My reading is that the songwriter is
talking
about moving, but is not so hot on the
actual moving part.
Gotta move on!
The song is also not funky, but maybe that's another reason to want to go to Funkytown.

Terry Grant was a wonderful specimen of a man. Hell, he was a speciman among specimen.
