* SixApart has a twitter account which can be used to keep track of the status of things during an outage like last nights! It is at http://twitter.com/sixapart/ .

* Enough other people found out about SixApart's twitter account that it got slashdotted -- or at least Twitter seemed to be down at some point last night when I was trying to check it. Oh well.

Apparently a power outage caused all the mess and "his power outage caused downtime in several large networks, including all of Six Apart's services (LiveJournal, Vox, TypePad and Movable Type) and other networks such as Craigslist, Technorati and Yelp." which is probably why the twitter account also went down.

Ah well. It's strange to think there was life before LJ. :)

Twitter is one of those things I just don't get. Is it really what it looks like, a means for people to spend all their spare moments typing up a running commentary on their life?

Also, is ArkMOO hosted on an affected server? Cuz I can't connect.

here's what *I* learned in the Great LJ Outage of 2007.

BOOKS DON'T NEED SERVERS.

...however, these days it's awfully hard for libraries to function without them.

(The power at my workplace has gone out so often in the last couple of years that the university finally coughed up the money for a backup generator.)

well. i am well aware of that fact. i kinda meant the ones that are already on my shelf - not the ones cataloged online.

when the servers went down at my old library. . . we MANUALLY checked them out (the horror!) we had to look in our old CARD CATALOGS (which, i know, don't even exist at all anymore most places).

I get those same messages but after that I can connect to the kibology channel.

status.livejournal.com (http://status.livejournal.com) works when LJ is down, including during last night's outage. It explained that there was a power failure.

I think status was down for 90 minutes or so, according to the LJ update. I couldn't connect to it when LJ first went down, and I'll take their word for it on when it came back up.
