one end of the long one is hiding in such a way as to appear not to exist. Also it doesn't have another end of the yarn attached to it, making it appear that both ends of the shorter needle are somehow going to work with the same yarn. I presume what's actually going on is just that the stitches are going to slide from one needle to the other.
I added a note to the flickr page showing where the other end of the shiny needle is hiding under the project. The yarn does slide from one needle to the next as you work it. (Actually when I'm working on it I just use the 40" needle, but that isn't big enough to show the whole thing laid out.)
