Eccleston gave the most radically different portrayal of the Doctor since Jon Pertwee's. Tennant's and Smith's takes on the character are more in line with the majority of the classic series.
I'd say this is what unsettled the established Doctor Who fans, but, then again, many of the people who like Tennant best are new fans of the post-2005 show.
