Curiously, the radical is rendered as â on my friends page, but looks correct in the entry view.

Hmm. In the ISO Latin 1 encoding the radical appears instead as √. Is that what you see?

Your friends page has <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> so I'm not sure why it would be displayed with the wrong encoding.
