Podcast update

Three new podcast recordings, two of them made today.

1. The Christian Life [introduction] (March 28, 2006) -- guitar and vocals
2. Hickory Wind [introduction] (April 1, 2006) -- guitar and vocals
3. Cow Cow Blues [introduction] (April 1, 2006) -- solo piano

I started the podcast on March 1, so I've been doing this for a month exactly -- 21 recordings in 31 days. (Three of the recordings were old, so that's 18 new recordings.) That's pretty respectable, I think.

You are the only other person (besides myself) who I've heard cover 'The Christian Life'. I knew it from when I was a kid, from one of my dad's records, The Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo, with slightly different lyrics. (I think 'Hickory Wind' is also on there.) My dad, you see, was a flatpicker and had tons of Clarence White's work.

I heard it on Sweetheart of the Rodeo too, then later found a version by the Whitstein Brothers on the iTunes Music store which is where I got the lyrics I used. I haven't heard the original Louvin Brothers version, although I see that's now also in the iTunes Music Store so maybe I'll check it out sometime.

I think the New Yorker had an article on the Louvins a year or two and one thing the author mentioned about the song is that there's a sense of longing in the way the song is song, which I think is true.

You're right, Hickory Wind is on the same album, although for some reason I didn't make that connection myself. I first heard it on a Gram Parsons tribute record called Return of the Grievous Angel where it's performed by Gillian Welch.
