The great thing about Long Tail stories is: everyone assumes it's a new phenomenon, but it was a normal part of free trade until CAPITALISM CRUSHED IT MERCILESSLY.
And now it's coming back, and people are shocked at this strange concept.
It wasn't really crushed by capitalism -- crafts production has continued in the bespoke trade and patronages, but in smaller volume since every family who used to have one kettle and one bowl can now afford a whole kitchen's worth -- but it's only recently that somebody's found a way (or insight toward a way) to make it profitable in mass production and distribution systems.
It's an interesting phenomenon, but I doubt there's as much to talk about as there are people making money with it on the lecture circuits.
