I was wondering if all of the people pictured actually have names. Hey, they do! The little hat-wearing kid is apparently not actually a member of the Bumstead family, so I'm not sure why he would be eating meals with them.
It's annoying that the (presumably) neighbor kid looks exactly like Dagwood. I hope something isn't being implied. That animation is really alarming. The little stroking motion on the receiving hand, and the crappy secondary wobble! Makes it look like Dithers has been replaced with an inflatable double. Sort of like those air-filled snowmen people put up around winter.
Herb Woodley and Mr. Beasley the mailman also look almost identical in that comic. (You can see both of them towards the bottom here.) I thought that someone wrote to Cecil Adams of The Straight Dope about this phenomina at some point, but I can't seem to find it.
I wonder if there's a doppelDithers somewhere in the Blondie universe?
I was going to say something about how Dagwood and Herb carpool together, but I suppose that doesn't necessarily rule out the latter being the former's mailman.
Speaking of identical characters being confusing, the fact that the two identical characters are also wearing almost the same outfit makes this cartoon very distracting.
I believe that some newspaper run Sunday comics without the top row of panels, which would make this particular comic even more confusing; you couldn't be sure who was who until the second-to-last panel.
I think the story is that the kid just likes the Bumsteads and maybe likes Blondie's cooking better than his mom's, so he invites himself over to dinner frequently.
Not that I actually read this strip, you understand, but I, um, heard that somewhere. Or something.

Plus, I would never, ever have guessed this backstory.
