or maybe this is more Oulipian than postmodern, but anyway.

I had this idea where you would create a new play out of two existing plays. The first play remains the same, except that all of a main character's lines are replaced with lines from a character in another play.

I think that ideally there would be some kind of a relationship between the two parts -- for instance, perhaps play #1 could be 'Romeo & Juliet' and play #2 could be 'West Side Story', or you could do a mashup of 'Oedipus Rex' and 'Oedipus at Colonus'.

Has anyone ever done this? Was the play produced? How was it received?

Sounds quintessentially surrealist to me, very similar to exquisite corpse. If only Leonard Rossiter were still around, he should be in one of these. In fact, maybe Reginald Perrin could be transplanted into some film about faking suicide, say, Harold and Maude.
