I got the following text message on my cellphone sometime last night:

Alex i love u 2 bu t stop looking 4 trouble or u are going 2 handle it

It's from a phone number in the 646 area code, which I guess is Manhattan.

This sort of thing gives you a smudgy little window into some stranger's life. The phone number we had in Malden had previously belonged to a guy who had some collection agencies after him, and sometimes got calls from somebody in prison.

More recently, I've been getting calls on my cell for Danny. I still want to know whether Danny ever went to Billerica, and if in fact he found out that they do not fuck around in Billerica, as one caller warned him; and whether the alleged general impression in Medford that Danny is "totally gay" has any bearing on this.
