I think that regardless of how much or how little of a distraction the knitting is to you personally, it will be seen as rude to the cast and crew.
I didn't vote on the second part, however, because you left off the option: "Will never tell the person they're distracting, but will constantly make veiled innuendo alluding to poor behavior."
What's the context? Knitting through a noisy avante-garde revue in a nightclub-style converted garage ≠ knitting in tightly packed Lincoln-era theatre seats through a quietly heartbreaking drama.
FWIW, crochet is compacter and has no clicking needles. That's why my wife sits in the back and crochets through all my concerts.
I said it was fine but really it depends on the venue. If the seats are really close together, then knitting might take up more than your allotted space and that would not be fine.
