My grandfather sends me flong from time to time. (I have occasionally made reference to this.)

For the ones that refer to things that are theoretically real, verifiable, events, I typically look them up in Snopes, look further for primary sources if possible, and reply back with polite (I hope) corrections. (The ones that contain jokes, or lists of palindromes, or cute animated pictures of puppies, I just delete.) My grandfather has never responded to my replies, although I've occasionally gotten email from other family members about it.

This week, however, my grandfather has sent me a pair of emails saying things that Snopes actually verified to be true! I don't know what to make of this development.

Someone who is, as far as I can tell, a complete stranger sent me and a bunch of other people (I think we have a mutual friend who himself occasionally sends messages to all of us) a nice little piece of flong.

I probably should have just deleted it, but instead I replied to all.

My grandfather continues to send me flong. I've discarded the latest but I see that copies of it are online in various places (including a debunking by Snopes).

[a bunch of stuff snipped]

Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON"T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

[lots more snippery]

This was brought to mind while I stopped to get gas while driving to Massachusetts today, and I turned it over in my head a little to figure out why I didn't buy the argument (apart from the fact that it appeared in a piece of flong). Before long I noticed that the same reasoning could be used to prove the opposite result:

For the rest of the year if you don't purchase ANY gasoline from EXXON and MOBIL, then other companies will be selling more gas and will be inclined to raise their prices. If they raise their prices, then EXXON and MOBIL will have no reason not to follow suit.

You shouldn't generally be able to prove a statement and its opposite using the same argument, so the argument must be flawed. Q.E.D.

I am geek.

One of my (extremely religious) grandparents sent a nice piece of flong to all and sundry, including me. I've discarded it, but it was this Neal Boortz speech (but it claimed that he actually gave it at some college's commencement, which the website makes clear is not the case).

I read the thing through and replied back to all, quoting this bit of the speech:
That about sums it up, really: Liberals feel. Liberals care. They are pack animals whose identity is tied up in group dynamics.  Conservatives and Libertarians think -- and, setting aside the theocracy crowd, their identity is centered on the individual.
My comment: "'The theocracy crowd'?"

Now I feel a little bad about it and am wondering what repercussions, if any, there will be. Hopefully all that will happen is that people will stop sending me these things.
