I happened across a conversation (which, believe me, you do not want to read) which brought out the old chestnut, "Where are the female Beethovens?"

Now, I seem to remember that at some point someone (spurred by this sort of question) had a look back and discovered that there were actually a number of great female composers at the time; they were just mostly ignored at the time and continue to largely be ignored today. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find anything about this online, but I'm pretty sure I didn't imagine it. Does anyone else have any idea what I'm talking about?

(Another response is along the lines of Virginia Woolf's essay on Shakespeare's sister, but that's not what I'm thinking of.)

sexism note

In the last month or so I've been noticing a lot of stories, posts, personal anecdotes, etc. about sexism in various forms. (In some cases this has involved harassment of women, or sexual assault of friends of mine; in others it has been men in positions of power, who I am sure don't think of themselves as being sexist, treating professional women very disrespectfully, in ways that I don't think they would treat similarly qualified men; in some cases it has been decisions of the Supreme Court; and other stuff too.)

I'm sure that none of this is any news to women, and I'm sure that being shocked by it, as I was in many cases, would strike many as being absurdly naive.

So after all of that bad news, I did get some satisfaction reading this bit of news, which indicates that acting in these ways can have consequences. I hope that you do too. ([livejournal.com profile] rimrunner posted about this originally.)

In other news, someone said to me today, "I love that you're male and you knit," which I don't think anyone has ever said in quite that way before. (What I should have said was that I also enjoy both of those things, but instead I said a weaker version of that, which was that I loved it too.)

I know, I know. We've all heard the rumors, we've all heard the jokes, maybe we've even told a few ourselves. And yet ... I never even suspected the sheer size of the difference. Perhaps you are the same as I was until yesterday. If so, prepare to have your mind expanded.
