A while ago, [livejournal.com profile] cgoldfish strongly hinted that she would like me to make her a hat from Weekend Knitting which I had previously made for a friend's newborn baby. The book had the pattern sized for adults, too, so this seemed doable ...

Not long after her birthday we went to A Stitch Above and she picked out a couple of new merino colors for use on the main part of the pattern. I had worked on a couple of alternative designs from the ones given in the book (which had hearts and stars) and she picked the one of those that she liked also.

From there it was pretty easy to knit the hat up ... although I did make a mistake at the end which was almost disasterous, but I managed to recover. Anyway, here are some pictures of the hat by itself and modeled by Marvin the Paranoid Android and the meerkat. I confess to thinking that the Marvin picture is almost unspeakably cute.

pictures! )

Anyway, I'm really happy with how it came out, and I look forward to giving the finished product to [livejournal.com profile] cgoldfish the next time I see her.

Tomorrow I go to Massachusetts where I will give my nephew his birthday stuffed robot. (He's turning two on Thursday.)

Here's a sample square I made to make sure that the pattern I came up with would actually look OK rendered in yarn:
arrrrrrrr )
The border (which I included to keep the square from curling) is maybe a little over-elaborate.

I apparently wrote this for [livejournal.com profile] kerri9494 in April of 2004. Does anyone remember why?
A dalek and a pirate walked into a bar.

The bartender said, "Why do you have a dalek with you?"

The dalek said, "EX! TER! MIN! ATE! EX! TER! MIN! ATE!" and incinerated the bartender.

The pirate turned to the dalek and said, "Arrrr, I told ye before, ye clattering pile of tin, get the grog first, THEN exterminate!"

The dalek replied, "I! OBEY!"  Then it blew up.

The end.
Actually, it doesn't end there, because [livejournal.com profile] doctroid complained that the joke needed more obelisk, so I revised it as follows.
A pirate, a dalek, and a lawyer walk into a bar.  Behind the bar, instead of a bartender, there's a giant black obelisk.

The lawyer walks up to the bar and touches the obelisk.  In short order he's evolved to become a super star lawyer baby and goes off to start lawsuits on Europa, his briefcase spinning slowly in the air as the band plays 'Waltzing Mathilda'.

The pirate, impressed by this, goes up to the bar too, but after a moment he returns looking dejected.

The dalek says, "MUST! ASK! WHY! OBELISK! DID! NOT! ACCELLERATE! EVOLUTION! OF! THE! PIRATE!"

The pirate says, "Arrrr, I wanted to, but I couldn't touch the obelisk."

The dalek replies, "WHY! NOT! ANSWER! ME! ANSWER! ME! OR! YOU! WILL! BE! EX! TER! MIN! ATE! ED! ANSWER! ANSWER!"

The pirate responds, "It's these stupid hooks, ye tin-plated lubber swab!"

Then the dalek vaporized him.
I have no memory of writing either of these.

Arrrrrrr!

I just got back from seeing Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Whee!

It's based of course on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland, which I have never been to. But! I have played two and a half of the LucasArts Monkey Island games, so that is more or less what I went into the movie looking for. And I was not disappointed in this regard; pretty much all the major and minor characters except maybe the two romantic interest characters and the head of the army guy would have fit right into a Monkey Island game.

So I was pretty satisfied, although, really, the ending didn't really make sense. Spoilery Stuff ) Although, thinking about it, if my basis of comparison is the Monkey Island games then the story either shouldn't have had a real ending at all or the ending should have been totally bizarre and nonsensical. So perhaps it does not do to complain.

I drove home happy and humming piratey songs from Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance. It was all very cheering.

Perhaps I'll take another stab at finishing Escape from Monkey Island tonight.
