I just got back from seeing Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Whee!

It's based of course on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland, which I have never been to. But! I have played two and a half of the LucasArts Monkey Island games, so that is more or less what I went into the movie looking for. And I was not disappointed in this regard; pretty much all the major and minor characters except maybe the two romantic interest characters and the head of the army guy would have fit right into a Monkey Island game.

So I was pretty satisfied, although, really, the ending didn't really make sense. I mean, at the end of the movie surely everyone in the colony has even more of a reason to hate pirates than they did at the beginning, didn't they? Why does suddenly everyone LOVE PIRATES? Although, thinking about it, if my basis of comparison is the Monkey Island games then the story either shouldn't have had a real ending at all or the ending should have been totally bizarre and nonsensical. So perhaps it does not do to complain.

I drove home happy and humming piratey songs from Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance. It was all very cheering.

Perhaps I'll take another stab at finishing Escape from Monkey Island tonight.

It occurred to me while watching the endgame that there seemed to be a little inconsistency in the mortal/immortal routine. Unless I'm mistaken, Rush is shot by Depp before Bloom puts the coin back in the box. Which means that either Rush should have survived the shot, or Depp should have died from the, er, piercing he sustained while fighting Rush.

Of course, I was too busy enjoying the show to be concerned about this.

Yes, I thought of this too. But to be fair, the exact mechanics of the whole pirate->zombie pirate->pirate transmogrification dealie wasn't really spelled out. Also, I suppose the bullet could have been lodged in what turned out to be the pirate captain's skin.

I think they could have changed the sequence of events slightly to make the whole thing make more sense, but, you know, whatever.

I kind of wonder what happened to the zombie pirates that were blowed up real good, but then I stop.

Also, was what's-his-face's father also a zombie pirate, and if so, had he been stuck at the bottom of the ocean for fifteen years? That can't be too pleasant.

I was happy that one or two of the pirates actually said 'Arrrr', but not enough to overdo it.

I loved that Johnny Depp got to yell out a bunch of seafaring crap at the very end, all that "hoist the mainbrace" routine. I bet he loved it, too. I imagine the direction would have been something like, "ok, Johnny, HAM IT FOR ALL YOU'RE WORTH!"
