Here's an exchange I heard on NPR last night regarding immigration reform:

Tom Ashbrook: "Linda Chavez, you hear Tom Tancredo. He's been a big, big opponent here and he's still saying 'No way, no how' this morning, at least as things stand today. So is the congressman and those who share his perspective -- are they in the rational middle ground or not?"

Linda Chavez: "Well, what he's really saying is 'No way, José.'"

I guess sometimes when you see the opportunity like that it's hard to pass it by.

(I should probably say that if you want to hear the rest of the show, which wasn't on the whole as goofy as the above excerpt, it is at: http://www.onpointradio.org/shows/2006/05/20060516_a_main.asp . I'm not a big fan of Tom Ashbrook, though, or of NPR call-in shows in general.)

I got to bed sort of late last night, and then this morning was woken up by a pager at around 6 am. As I was trying to get back to sleep after that I was in one of those semi-unconscious states where you're still sort of awake but thoughts are chasing each other around in your brane in a fairly unrestricted fashion.

After listening to my subconscious chatter away at itself for a while I was surprised to notice a pause in the activity, which was followed by a single 'voice' saying something like, 'We hope you're enjoying these thoughts, and we know you do, but we can't keep doing it without your help. So contribute now! ...' My subconscious was subjecting me to a pledge break!

Noticing this jolted me into a bit more of a waking state. As I started to relax again, the babble of unstructured thought started to fill my mind once again, and eventually it resolved itself into an internal debate (I don't remember the topic). This was normal enough, except that eventually I realized that the voices my subconscious had chosen for the two sides of the debate were Tom and Ray from Car Talk.

Yesterday morning I was helping to disassemble a building in Massachusetts. (Well, I was removing shingles from the building. Other, more competent people did things like removing rafters.)

I thought it would be nice to listen to something while doing this, so I brought along a portable radio and tuned it in to a local NPR station so I could listen to the morning news.

After the news, a new program came on in which various stage actors read short stories by various authors. I was not particularly attached to this, but it was something to listen to.

After a while of this, one of the other house-dismantlers came over and asked me if I minded if he changed the station. I said that was fine, and thought to myself, Well, fair enough, not everyone wants to listen to NPR all day.

So he went over to the radio and switched to a classical music station.
